Complete legal representation for visas, continuous residence permits, and European free travel.
Bulgarian Schengen Visa & Residence Permits: Your Gate to Europe
With Bulgaria officially part of the Schengen area, holding a Bulgarian visa or residency card (Lichna Karta) is now one of the most powerful administrative assets in Europe. For international business founders, retired individuals, and non-EU families, a local residence permit now functions as a primary Schengen transit pass, granting border-free travel across all 29 Schengen member states without separate visa applications.
However, the immigration bureaucracy remains complex. Non-EU applicants must successfully navigate rigorous compliance checks under the Bulgarian Foreigners Act. From choosing the correct legal pathway to managing translations and consulate schedules, even a minor filing error can lead to a direct visa rejection. Our bilingual immigration lawyers manage the entire application pipeline, ensuring your transition goes perfectly.
We act as your proxy, coordinating directly with Migration Directorates and consulates so your European residency remains highly secure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Bulgaria officially part of the Schengen zone?
Yes. As of March 2024, Bulgaria is officially in the Schengen zone via air and sea borders. Flights between Bulgaria and other Schengen nations have no passport controls. Land border integration is actively being finalized. A Bulgarian residency permit grants full Schengen travel rights.
Do I need a separate visa if I already hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa?
No. Non-EU citizens holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen Visa (Type C) or a residency permit from another Schengen state can travel to and stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without requiring a separate Bulgarian visa.
Can I change my tourist visa (Visa C) to a long-stay residency permit inside Bulgaria?
No. Bulgarian immigration law strictly mandates that the transition to long-term residency requires an active Visa D. You must physically apply for Visa D at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home country or country of official residence before travelling to Bulgaria.
How long does it take to process a Visa D and a subsequent Residence Permit?
Embassy processing of a Visa D takes between 30 to 45 working days. Once you arrive in Bulgaria with your Visa D, the local Migration Directorate takes 14 business days (standard) or 3 days (fast-track) to process and issue your physical residency card (Lichna Karta).
Does company incorporation automatically grant a long-term residency permit?
No. Simply incorporating a standard Bulgarian LLC (OOD/EOOD) does not grant residency. To qualify through a company, you must either: (1) register a Trade Representative Office (TRO) representing a foreign parent company, or (2) hire at least 10 local Bulgarian citizens.
